About
Money advice that respects your time and intelligence.
I started Straight Talk Money because most of the financial content aimed at newcomers and Canadian families either oversimplifies things or quietly tries to sell you something. I wanted a place that did neither.
Why this exists
When I arrived in Canada, the gap between what banks and brokers told me and what actually happened was enormous. I learned the hard way that perfect credit history from another country counts for nothing here, that the "free" newcomer banking package quietly starts costing you after a year, and that nearly every "advisor" you meet in your first month is paid on commission.
None of that is a scandal — it's just how the system works. But nobody is sitting you down to explain it plainly. That's what I try to do here.
How I write
Every article is built on real research — Statistics Canada data, CRA documentation, actual policy from the OSFI and CMHC, and current rates from the major lenders. When I share a rule of thumb, I tell you where it comes from. When I disagree with the conventional wisdom, I show my work.
I don't sell financial products. I don't take affiliate payments from banks or brokers. If a tool or account is genuinely worth using, I'll say so — and I'll tell you when something heavily marketed to newcomers is just average.
What you'll find here
Six topic areas, written for the moments they matter: budgeting, credit building, mortgages, insurance, cost of living, and the newcomer essentials nobody warns you about. Plus a small set of calculators for working through your own numbers without handing your email to anyone.
